Wake Up to Resistance

Flex them chops. Craft soul
until they aim faulty pistols or

use sharp knees or interpretations
of American law. No need to

comply. Refuse tradition. Establish
new religion. Normal stuff. We

are built for this savage wilderness,
this strange stage of humanity.

I start morning with a poor
disposition, a higher frequency,

a vibration screaming, like James
Brown or Bobby Womack. Militant.

Liberated. Beautiful. This form
of freedom resembles Huey

Newton in 1966 or James Baldwin
examining layers and nuances

of a flawed paradigm. Sunlight
leans on wooden steps, offering

golden carpet to a parking lot
that is pregnant with metal.

This is how most days begin.
