Used to the Weather

Adapting to the changes. To
changes, I adapt. Eerily. Patiently.

An early November morning winks
her eye. Still gambling with old

dice, trying to outlive the poison
of snakebites or out hustle

the pigs at a scrambler’s pace.
Colonial thinking does not live

in these veins. Strange DNA. I
hear an unkempt drummer.

Hands slap tall djembes, talking
to God. He got the channel wide

open. I filter through. God particles
spreading, like Latin jazz on

a Saturday morning drive through
Northern Vermont. The cracked

trotters of Empire don’t affect me.
Apply the pedal to the floor and

breathe for tomorrow–just different
energy. Men are defined by the

legacies they create, or how
infrequently they smile, or how

they organize steps in well-
crafted Decay. Refuse to obey

the rules, especially if they prevent
flight. I organize steps, count

my coins, and lean into the day.
