Hampton, Like Fred

Hampton boulevard
buzzes. I stalk sidewalk.
A Free Palestine flag
flaps in front of an old
tree, towering, like
a symbol of an American
today, a tale creeping
along flesh, begging
for the right interpretation.
D. Trump is in Norfolk.
Protesters put toes on
burning sidewalks. Justice
simmers. I can’t feel
my face these days,
hustling in between
the headlines, trying
to be fly, piercing clouds,
trying to weaponize voice,
without sabotaging
tomorrow. Feeling like
Fred Hampton on this
sunbathed street.
Sunday traffic bleeds
onto weekend roads,
carefree, wild, snake-
like, and metallic. Need
a strong cup of a dark
blend to attack the rest
of the dying day. Let
me lose myself in
the beast’s acidic belly,
like an unkempt child
confronting daily gambles
with a clenched fist
and a swollen chest.
